Scottish Botanical Amulet - Fern Spirit with Red Tiger's Eye
Part of the Scottish Botanical Amulet collection, this one-of-a-kind piece was created using a real fern gathered in Scotland. Through the process of copper electroforming, layer upon layer of copper was permanently deposited onto the fern itself, capturing its delicate structure, intricate textures, and natural form in lasting metal. Every detail of the original fern remains beautifully visible, transforming this gift of the wild Scottish woodland into a unique keepsake. Handcrafted in my small studio in rural Scotland, each amulet carries a connection to the landscape from which its story began.
The fern fronds shown alongside the amulet in the photographs are from the same species used in its creation, offering a glimpse of the living plant whose delicate structure was captured in copper.
Faceted Red Tiger's Eye beads are paired with natural wooden beads, bringing together warm earthy tones inspired by forest paths, weathered bark, and the rich colours of the woodland floor. Suspended from an adjustable beaded cord with a sliding knot, this amulet may be worn close to the neck or lowered to rest near the heart, adapting to the wearer's preference.

Symbolism of the Design
Few plants carry as much mystery as the fern. Long before many familiar flowering plants appeared, ferns were already thriving across the ancient landscape, unfurling their delicate fronds beneath the shelter of towering trees.
Across Celtic and European folklore, ferns were often regarded as plants of hidden wisdom and woodland magic. Legends spoke of the elusive fern seed, said to reveal hidden treasures or grant special insight to those fortunate enough to find it. Growing quietly in shaded forests and secret places, ferns became symbols of protection, mystery, and the unseen wonders believed to dwell within the wild places of the world.
Captured in copper, this once-living fern becomes a symbol of discovery, curiosity, and the courage to follow paths that others may overlook. Like the ancient forests it calls home, it invites us to venture beyond the familiar and remain open to the possibilities waiting just beyond the next bend.
Spiritual & Symbolic Associations

- Personal Growth
Red Tiger's Eye has long been associated with motivation, courage, and the confidence to move forward when the path ahead is uncertain. Its rich red and golden tones bring to mind glowing embers carried through the darkness, symbolising determination, passion, and inner strength. The stone's distinctive colour is traditionally achieved through the application of heat, a transformation that feels fitting for a crystal so often associated with courage and personal growth. Like embers glowing within a fire, its deep red hues speak of warmth, resilience, and the quiet power of transformation.
The wooden beads add another layer to the story, echoing the natural materials of the forest itself. Paired with the fern and Red Tiger's Eye, they reinforce the connection between growth, resilience, and the enduring beauty of the natural world.
Together, the fern, wood, and stone tell a story of exploration and discovery. They remind us that growth often begins with curiosity, that courage is found in taking the next step, and that every journey leaves its own mark upon us.Together, the fern, wood, and Red Tiger's Eye tell a story of quiet courage and personal growth. The fern has long been associated with hidden wisdom and the mysteries found beyond the familiar, while Red Tiger's Eye is often linked with motivation, confidence, and the determination to keep moving forward.
Rather than urging us to seek constant change, this combination speaks of trusting ourselves as we navigate life's twists and turns. It reminds us that courage is not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it is simply the willingness to keep going, to follow our own path, and to remain open to what we may discover about ourselves along the way.
When creating this piece, I wanted it to carry the feeling of standing at the edge of a woodland path, not knowing exactly where it leads but trusting yourself enough to take the first step. It serves as a reminder that confidence grows through experience, wisdom is gathered along the journey, and some of our greatest growth happens when we move forward despite uncertainty.
