Scottish Botanical Amulet - Fern Spirit
Part of the Scottish Botanical Amulet collection, this one-of-a-kind piece was created using a real fern gathered in Scotland. Through the process of copper electroforming, layer upon layer of copper was permanently deposited onto the fern itself, capturing its delicate structure, intricate textures, and natural form in lasting metal. Every detail of the original fern remains beautifully visible, transforming this gift of the wild Scottish woodland into a unique keepsake. Handcrafted in my small studio in rural Scotland, each amulet carries a connection to the landscape from which its story began.
The fern fronds shown alongside the amulet in the photographs are from the same species used in its creation, offering a glimpse of the living plant whose delicate structure was captured in copper.
Suspended from a copper-coloured steel chain, this amulet may be worn as a striking statement piece, allowing the natural beauty of the fern to take centre stage.

Symbolism of the Design
Few plants carry as much mystery as the fern. Long before many familiar flowering plants appeared, ferns were already thriving across the ancient landscape, unfurling their delicate fronds beneath the shelter of towering trees.
Across Celtic and European folklore, ferns were often regarded as plants of hidden wisdom and woodland magic. Legends spoke of the elusive fern seed, said to reveal hidden treasures or grant special insight to those fortunate enough to find it. Growing quietly in shaded forests and secret places, ferns became symbols of protection, mystery, and the unseen wonders believed to dwell within the wild places of the world.
Captured in copper, this once-living fern becomes a symbol of discovery, intuition, and connection to the ancient rhythms of nature. Its graceful form invites us to slow down, wander beyond the familiar, and remain open to the quiet magic that surrounds us each day.
Spiritual & Symbolic Associations

- Connection to Nature
Unlike many pieces in the collection, this amulet stands on its own without the addition of crystals. The fern itself becomes the focus of the story, allowing the symbolism of the plant to speak clearly through its preserved form.
For centuries, ferns have been connected with mystery, hidden knowledge, and the idea that nature holds secrets for those willing to look closely. Their unfurling fronds remind us that growth is often gradual and that understanding arrives in its own time.
When creating this piece, I wanted it to carry the atmosphere of a quiet woodland after rainfall, where the scent of earth lingers in the air and ancient ferns glisten beneath a canopy of trees. It serves as a reminder that some of life's greatest treasures are not found through searching, but through paying attention to what is already around us.
