Scottish Botanical Amulet - Maple Spirit with Red and Orange Garnet
Part of the Scottish Botanical Amulet collection, this one-of-a-kind piece was created using a real maple leaf gathered in Scotland. Through the process of copper electroforming, layer upon layer of copper was permanently deposited onto the leaf itself, preserving its intricate veins, delicate textures, and natural form in lasting metal. Handcrafted in my small studio in rural Scotland, this amulet celebrates the fleeting beauty of nature and the stories carried within every season.
The leaves shown alongside the amulet in the photographs are from the same tree used in its creation, offering a glimpse of the living plant whose delicate structure was captured in copper.
The leaf has been finished with a multicoloured patina, creating shifting tones of copper, bronze, violet, blue, and gold that catch the light differently from every angle. Suspended from an adjustable cord adorned with rich red Garnet and vibrant orange Spessartite Garnet beads separated by warm brass accents, the piece evokes the colours of autumn forests glowing beneath a setting sun.

Symbolism of the Maple Leaf
The maple leaf has long been associated with transformation, wisdom, and the ever-changing cycles of life. As the seasons turn, maple trees create some of the most spectacular displays in nature, their leaves shifting through shades of gold, amber, scarlet, and copper before returning to the earth.
In folklore, the maple was often viewed as a tree of balance, endurance, and protection. Across Britain and Europe, maple wood was sometimes used in household items and musical instruments, lending the tree associations with harmony, creativity, and bringing beauty into everyday life. Some traditions believed maple could help ward away negativity and invite good fortune into the home.
Unlike many symbols that focus on beginnings or endings alone, the maple reminds us to honour the entire journey. Each leaf carries the memory of spring's growth, summer's abundance, autumn's transformation, and winter's rest. It teaches that every stage has value and that beauty can be found not only in becoming something new, but also in fully embracing who we are in the present moment.

- Inner Fire
Red Garnet has been treasured for thousands of years and is among the oldest gemstones used in adornment and talismans. Across many cultures it symbolised life force, devotion, courage, and protection. Travellers and warriors often carried Garnet as a companion stone, believing it could guide them safely through uncertain paths and help them remain strong during times of challenge.
Spiritually, Red Garnet is often associated with grounding, determination, resilience, and the courage to keep moving forward. It is linked with motivation, commitment, and a strong connection to one's goals and aspirations. Many people are drawn to Garnet during times when they are rebuilding confidence, pursuing ambitions, or seeking to reconnect with their inner strength and sense of purpose.
Spessartite Garnet, recognised by its fiery orange and amber tones, carries a lighter and more radiant symbolic energy. Often associated with creativity, enthusiasm, inspiration, and joyful self-expression, it is seen as a stone that encourages fresh ideas, curiosity, and the confidence to embrace new possibilities. Its warm glow has led many crystal enthusiasts to connect it with optimism, passion for life, and the courage to follow one's own unique path.
Together, Red Garnet and Spessartite Garnet create a beautiful balance between grounding and inspiration. Red Garnet offers stability, determination, and steady strength, while Spessartite encourages creativity, excitement, and forward movement. Their rich autumnal colours echo the changing leaves of the season, reminding us that transformation is not something to fear, but something to celebrate.
When creating this piece, I wanted it to represent the beauty of fully expressing your true colours. The multicoloured patina seemed to mirror the way we change and evolve throughout life, revealing different aspects of ourselves as we grow. Just as no two autumn leaves ever display exactly the same combination of colours, no two life journeys unfold in quite the same way.
Rather than symbolising endings, this piece celebrates authenticity. It serves as a reminder that every experience, challenge, success, and lesson contributes to the unique colours we carry within us. Like a maple leaf glowing brilliantly before it falls, there is beauty in allowing yourself to be fully seen.
Chakra Association
Red Garnet is most often associated with the Root Chakra, symbolically connecting it with grounding, stability, courage, and vitality. Spessartite Garnet is commonly linked with the Sacral Chakra, where it is associated with creativity, passion, joy, and self-expression.
