Scottish Botanical Amulet - Fern Spirit with Labradorite Moon

Part of the Scottish Botanical Amulet collection, this one-of-a-kind piece was created using a real fern gathered in Scotland. Through the process of copper electroforming, layer upon layer of copper was permanently deposited onto the fern itself, capturing its delicate structure, intricate textures, and natural form in lasting metal. Every detail of the original fern remains beautifully visible, transforming this gift of the wild Scottish woodland into a unique keepsake. Handcrafted in my small studio in rural Scotland, each amulet carries a connection to the landscape from which its story began.

The fern fronds shown alongside the amulet in the photographs are from the same species used in its creation, offering a glimpse of the living plant whose delicate structure was captured in copper.

A real fern frond stretches across a circular copper frame beneath a crescent moon of Labradorite, creating a design inspired by moonlit forests and the quiet magic of the natural world. Labradorite beads and brass accents are woven into the adjustable cord, complementing the shifting blue flashes within the stone.

Symbolism of the Design

Few plants carry as much mystery as the fern. Long before many familiar flowering plants appeared, ferns were already thriving across the ancient landscape, unfurling their delicate fronds beneath the shelter of towering trees.

Across Celtic and European folklore, ferns were often regarded as plants of hidden wisdom and woodland magic. Legends spoke of the elusive fern seed, said to reveal hidden treasures or grant special insight to those fortunate enough to find it. Growing quietly in shaded forests and secret places, ferns became symbols of protection, mystery, and the unseen wonders believed to dwell within the wild places of the world.

The circular frame reflects the cycles woven throughout nature, while the crescent moon speaks of transformation, intuition, and the ever-changing rhythms of life. Together, the moon and fern create a symbol of quiet growth, reminding us that not all change happens in daylight. Some of our most meaningful transformations unfold gently, beneath the surface, just as the moon waxes and wanes across the night sky.

When creating this piece, I wanted it to carry the atmosphere of a moonlit forest clearing, where silver-blue light filters through the branches and the world feels suspended between dream and reality. A place of stillness, reflection, and hidden possibilities waiting to be revealed.
